is globalization a function of the dissemination of images, which itself is increasing the permeability of cultural barriers?

Partly, yes. I've always chalked up Globalisation to be more of a result of capitalistic enterprise, embarking on a new age of colonialism. The dissemination of images is naturally a part of it, since much of the distribution of images has been privatized. On the flip-side, theres also the advent of the internet, which we're all familiar with its effects.
